FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What tank size does a betta actually need?

At least 5 gallons, filtered and heated. Bettas are tropical fish and do poorly in unheated bowls or tiny tanks — a stable 76-82°F and real filtration matter more than tank shape or decor.

Can bettas live with other fish?

Sometimes, in a large enough tank with the right tankmates — calm, non-fin-nipping species like corydoras or certain tetras can work in 10+ gallons. Two male bettas should never share a tank, and even female bettas can be territorial in smaller spaces.

Why is my betta's fin torn or ragged?

Usually fin rot (often from poor water quality), physical damage from sharp decor, or nipping from a tankmate. Check water parameters first — ammonia and nitrite should read zero — and treat early; fin rot spreads faster than it heals on its own.

How often should I feed a betta?

Once or twice a day, only what they finish in about 2 minutes. Bettas are prone to overfeeding-related bloating and constipation, so a small, high-quality pellet portion beats a large one.

How can I tell a male from a female betta?

Males typically have longer, more dramatic fins and more saturated color; females are usually shorter-finned, sometimes with a visible egg spot near the belly. Coloring alone can be misleading in some strains, so fin shape and body proportions are the more reliable tell.
